Product Overview

CM Aquatechnik supplies absolute-rated pleated high flow filter cartridges in 20″, 40″ and 60″ lengths with a 6″ core diameter, for flows up to 100 m³/h per element. A single high flow element replaces up to 40 standard 10″ cartridges, reducing housing costs, footprint and maintenance time by 80%. Media are available in polypropylene, glass fibre, polyethersulfone (PES) and PTFE, with ratings from 0.1 to 70 µm absolute.

High flow cartridges are the standard choice for large-volume water filtration, such as pre-filtration ahead of industrial RO systems and seawater RO plants, municipal water treatment, condensate polishing and chemical process filtration. They are compatible with high flow housings from Parker, Pall and Pentair.

Why high flow cartridges instead of standard cartridges?
  • Fewer elements — one 60″ high flow element replaces up to 40 standard 10″ cartridges.
  • Smaller housings — fewer and smaller filter housings lower capital cost and save floor space.
  • More surface area — pleated media provide about 10× the surface area of wound cartridges, for longer service life.
  • Reliable retention — absolute-rated media retain particles consistently, protecting downstream membranes and equipment.
  • Faster maintenance — changing a few large elements takes a fraction of the time needed for dozens of small cartridges.

Sizing example

The number of elements follows from the design flow and the flow per element, which depends on the micron rating, the liquid and the allowed pressure drop. With up to 100 m³/h per 60″ element, a 300 m³/h RO pre-filtration typically needs 3 to 4 elements, including a safety margin. For smaller flows, standard PP spun cartridges or bag filters are often more economical.

High flow pleated vs. depth filter cartridges

Both cartridge types are used for high capacity cartridge filtration of water and other liquids, but they work differently:

  • Pleated high flow cartridges filter at the surface of a pleated polypropylene, glass fibre, PES or PTFE filter medium. They are absolute-rated, have a very large surface area and handle up to 100 m³/h per 60″ element with a low pressure drop. This makes them the first choice for RO pre-filtration and large, continuous flows.
  • High flow depth cartridges hold particles throughout a thick layer of melt-blown or spun polypropylene. They have a high dirt-holding capacity for water with a heavy or variable solids load, but are usually nominal-rated and allow lower flow per element.

Where the solids load is high, a depth or bag filter stage is often installed upstream to protect the pleated high flow cartridges and extend their service life.

Frequently asked questions

Which micron rating is used before reverse osmosis?

RO pre-filtration commonly uses 5 µm absolute cartridges, and sometimes 1 µm where the feed water contains fine particles. The right rating depends on your water analysis and the membrane manufacturer’s requirements.

When should high flow cartridges be replaced?

When the pressure drop reaches the recommended change-out value, which lies well below the maximum of 4.1 bar at 20 °C. Service life depends on the solids load of the water.

Are they compatible with my existing housings?

Our high flow cartridges fit high flow housings from Parker, Pall and Pentair. Send us the housing make and model and we will confirm the matching element.

Which liquids can be filtered with high flow cartridges?

Besides water, high flow filter cartridges are used for process liquids, chemicals, cooling water and condensate. The filter medium is chosen for the liquid: polypropylene for most water and chemical applications, glass fibre for higher temperatures and PTFE for aggressive media.

Are they suitable for drinking water and food applications?

Yes. The cartridges are available with FDA 21 CFR and NSF 61 compliant materials.
